Woody Allen Delivers Moving Homage to His Late Co-Star

After the passing of Diane Keaton at age 79, the acclaimed director has shared a detailed tribute celebrating her life and their profound bond.

Recalling a Extraordinary Partnership

In a newly released essay, the filmmaker, 89, described their time together from their first encounter in 1969 during rehearsals for his play Play It Again, Sam, spanning their half-decade love affair and the eight films they worked on together.

“As time went on, I directed pictures for an audience of one, Keaton herself,” he expressed. “I ignored a press commentary of my work and was concerned exclusively with what Keaton had to say about it.”

He added that she was “unique among people the earth has seen or is unlikely to ever experience anew,” and that “her presence and joy illuminated any space she stepped into.”

Unexpected Loss and Powerful Recollections

Keaton died after becoming unwell at her residence in Los Angeles. The actor had been away from the spotlight for some months, and a source close to her revealed that although no specific condition had been made public, her condition worsened quickly, with numerous of her trusted allies unaware that she was ailing.

Her passing nonetheless seemed to be a shock even to her closest circle.

“Just recently, the world was a realm that featured Diane Keaton,” states Allen. “Now it’s a world that does not. Thus, it’s a darker world. Still, there are her works. And her wonderful chuckle still resonates in my head.”

Keaton continued to be a steadfast ally of Allen after the reemergence of a 1992 abuse allegation leveled at him by his adopted daughter throughout a legal dispute.

In his 2020 memoir, Allen described Keaton as his “north star”; the figure whose view matters the most.

Reflecting in the previous year, she expressed: “He was so incredible. It consistently felt really extraordinary to be with Woody. He was fantastic. He was everything, and he continues to be [so] to me. He gave me endless opportunities. He truly did. Allen made it loose. That made a significant difference.”
