The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
