The Message That Sparked the Debate The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in military or security roles. "As we did, you all took an pledge to protect and defend this constitution," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from within our own country. Our regulations are clear, you can refuse unlawful commands, you can reject unlawful commands, you should reject improper directives. No one has to carry out commands that contravene the law or our national charter." The Former President's Angry Response The video message seemed to prompt a furious reaction from the previous commander-in-chief. On later in the week, Trump published on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL." In an additional post, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???" In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!" Opposition Leaders Answer Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats issued a combined declaration denouncing the statements. "Violent politics has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our country with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful threats of violence against congressional representatives, and urge Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same." The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to guarantee the security of these members and their loved ones." "Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged social media posts and retract his aggressive discourse before he leads to violence," the statement added. Officials' Firm Response The representatives who appeared in the video also issued a response. "We identify as former service members and security experts who value this nation and swore an oath to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred responsibility." "What's most telling is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Military personnel should know that we have their protection as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty." They continued: "The entire nation must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity." More Governmental Responses The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's statements and published on online networks: "It's important to understand: the former president is demanding the death of elected officials." He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and without qualification." The Republican House speaker justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", stating: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of the legislature telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in US history." The Conservative representative also allegedly told media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the wording and decide all that." Executive Branch Response During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Absolutely not." "Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the representative declared. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who conspired to organize a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the president's proper directives." She stated: "The sanctity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that system is compromised, it can cause fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
