The local council mentioned they were unable to take off the eyes without damaging the artwork.

A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after allegedly vandalizing a sizable blue sculpture of a legendary being by applying googly eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with one count of property damage.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the local council explained that CCTV footage captured a individual putting fake eyes on the sculpture, which residents have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and informed the judge she was unwell, as reported by media sources, with the magistrate recommending her to find a lawyer before her next court date in December.

Sculpture after eye removal
The damaged sculpture following the stickers were taken off.

The following day the alleged incident, the local mayor said that repairs to the popular public artwork would be costly as the stickers were impossible to be removed without harming the art piece.

“This wilful damage to a cherished public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin said in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also frustrating to those people of our society who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

The mayor said the council would pursue the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the damage.

At the time the sculpture was first proposed, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its cost and design.

Priced at A$136,000 ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater discovered in local caves that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
