A standout among Avatar: The Last Airbender's top episodes receives an exclusive MTG collector's set.

Typically, recap episodes are disliked among audiences as a pointless time filler, or at best viewed as a necessity for shows in the age of weekly production. That wasn't always the case, though Avatar: The Last Airbender proved it with "The Ember Island Players," a beloved installment during its concluding run now being getting a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair drop.

Highlights regarding the Secret Lair

The entire Secret Lair superdrop for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender edition was announced recently. Containing five distinct sets, and while the one called "My Cabbages!" is clearly funny homage to the show's best background character, the additional releases feel a bit lacking creativity, with one notable exception: "The Ember Island Players."

Drawing from installment 17 in the final season of the beloved series, this special set features these particular cards:

  • 1x Phantasmal Image as "Absolutely Accurate Actor"
  • 1x Braid of Fire
  • 1x Cursed Mirror
  • 1x Mask of Memory
  • 1x Thespian's Stage

The reason this installment is special

Fans of the series warmly cherish this episode, which acted as a review of Aang and his friends' adventure before the series' finale. Unlike typical clip shows, or retrospective segments, "The Ember Island Players" was not driven due to production constraints or scheduling problems. The producers genuinely intended to give fans an opportunity to recap the series' story, yet they chose to execute it with flair.

During the installment, the main characters view a theatrical performance depicting their adventures in a theater set on Ember Island, called The Boy in the Iceberg. The play itself is wildly exaggerated, over-the-top, and overall hilarious. It works because it plays with the characters' perception regarding their own identities, setting them against against how the world (and notably the Fire Nation) views them. It contains the perfect balance of self-awareness, and it becomes possibly the top rendition of the show we have had.

Value and pricing

Regarding worth, this represents an excellent Secret Lair due to one key factor: Braid of Fire. This specific card trades for $20 and $40 on various platforms at the time of writing, and at $29.99 you can acquire the entire Secret Lair, or for $39.99 for the shiny edition.

Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender set is available during early access events starting November 14 and debuts internationally on Nov. 21.
