A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is presently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of missing boats transporting humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Havana.

Military Rescue Operations Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and search planes to locate the missing boats, which were transporting at least 9 personnel, per a military release.

The boats had been scheduled to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, the navy said.

Context of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The island nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island grapples with multiple national electricity failures.

"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," a spokesperson for the convoy commented.

The nine-person crew are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"We are collaborating completely with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Recent Aid Mission

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and officially received a different ship that had delivered 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the country.

That ship, dubbed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, medicines, formula milk, bikes and provisions.

Broader Political Context

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, when a energy blockade on the country came into effect.

International organizations have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with more than fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Political measures have intensified over the past months, with remarks from different officials highlighting the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.

In response to certain proposals, a high-ranking government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces said it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to locate the sailboats and secure the safety of the sailors.

To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
